William T. Doe
Carrara House
Stonemason & Monumental Sculptor
Clay Street

Carrara House in 2007, William T. Doe, Stonemason.

Many local residence of Soham will remember Doe's the stone masons and many people would have used Mr Doe and his expertise for their loved ones monuments, many of the stones in Soham Cemetery are made him. The earliest we can trace the Doe family in Soham is on the 1881 Census.
It appears that the family moved around quite a lot before finally settling in Soham, they can be found listed on the Trade Directories for Soham from 1883 onwards, so it is probable that the business was set up around this time.
William Doe carried on his business in Clay Street until he died in 1899 aged 57 years, he is

buried in Soham Cemetery with his wife Louisa, who had died previously in 1897 aged 54 years. His son William Thomas Doe carried on the business in Clay Street until he died in 1926 aged 58 years, he is also buried in Soham Cemetery along with his wife Ada who died the previous year in 1925, aged 55 years.

It is not clear at present how the business went after the death of William Thomas Doe in 1926, but we believe that it may have been carried on in Clay Street by his Son William for a short while, perhaps up until 1935 at least, we also think William may have been joined in the business by his brother Thomas, we do know that Carrara House was Leased for 21 years in 1935 to E. Leonard & Son, (Butchers of Soham), and put up for sale in 1952.  William died in 1954 aged 59 years and was buried in the Soham Cemetery, later to be joined by his wife Alice Elizabeth who died in 1972 aged 66 years. After the death of William the business was certainly carried on by Thomas who by this time was running the business from premises in Fordham Road, he was well known as a conscientious tradesmen, who was often to be seen in the Cemetery taking care of his '' stones '' making sure they were all in good order and making any repairs that were needed. Thomas (Tom) Doe died in 1975 aged 63 years and is buried in the Soham Cemetery with his parents.

Quakers of Cambridgeshire
and the Isle of Ely.

This is a very interesting book that we have extracted the Cambridgeshire part from, the full title of the book is, A Collection of the Sufferings of the People called Quakers, and was published in 1753, but gives accounts as far back as 1653, has many names from this area and details of what became of them including their punishments because of their Faith, is an absolutely fascinating read.

Cambridgeshire and
Huntingdonshire Leaders.

A great resource for anyone with interest in the political and social history of both Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire

Cures for Beasts.

This is a little handwritten book dated 1817 in our possession, that once belonged to a local Live Stock Farmer, it is unique and is a book of recipes of old fashioned Cures for all manner of disorders in Cattle, Sheep and Horses, you can read how they cured these things with local ingredients, some sound pretty hair raising. Only available from us.
