Goodin Brothers
Store
High Class Tailors and Drapers
High Street
|
|

Goodin Brothers
Store decorated for
Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. |
We are
not sure exactly when the Goodin Bros business was
established in Soham but as you can see from the
photo shown on the left they were trading here in
1897, we think it was probably about the 1890's when
they started trading here. Frederick Goodin the
Proprietor originated from Bottisham in
Cambridgeshire. The premises of the Shop were known
as London House, and it appears from old trade
directories that whilst Frederick was listed as
Tailors and Woollen Drapers, Bertha was listed as
Milliner and Fancy Drapers, it seems that they were
trading from the same premises, which were quite
large and double fronted. |
|
Frederick Goodin died in 1923 aged 63 years and
Bertha his Wife died in 1920 aged 49 years ,
both are buried together in the Soham Cemetery
in Fordham Road. Their Son Leslie Oscar Goodin
died in 1937 aged 40 years and is buried next to
his Parents, they also had a Daughter Cynthia
who was a member of the Soham Amateur Dramatic
Society, but what happened to her we have yet to
discover.
We don't know when Goodins stopped trading in
the High Street, The Soham Launderette has been
in one half of the premises for many years, the
other half was at one time David Seals Farm
Fresh Greengrocer's Shop, this was trading in
the 1990's and is now a Tanning & Beauty Salon. |

Quakers of Cambridgeshire
and the Isle of Ely. |
|
This is a very interesting book that we
have extracted the Cambridgeshire part from, the full
title of the book is, A Collection of the Sufferings of
the People called Quakers, and was published in 1753,
but gives accounts as far back as 1653, has many names
from this area and details of what became of them
including their punishments because of their Faith, is
an absolutely fascinating read.

A great
resource for anyone with interest in the
political and social history of both
Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire |
 |
|
This is a
little handwritten book dated 1817 in our
possession, that once belonged to a local Live
Stock Farmer, it is unique and is a book of
recipes of old fashioned Cures for all manner of
disorders in Cattle, Sheep and Horses, you can
read how they cured these things with local
ingredients, some sound pretty hair raising.
