Tebbitt & Sons
Established pre 1814
Builders, Wheelwrights, Auctioneers and Undertakers
Churchgate Street & Oland House in the High Street
|
|

Tebbitts builders
yard in the High Street behind Oland House
(their offices) in 1939. |
The
foundation of Tebbitts & Sons, builders can be
traced back to pre 1814, most likely in Churchgate
Street, they are recorded in 1914 as being
established for over a century.
Our records show that in 1823 a Mr Robert Tebbett
was trading as a carpenter and joiner in Churchgate
Street near to where the old Albion printing works
were situated, it seems to have been a family run
business throughout its life, they are recorded in a
trade directory dated 1847 as Builders &
Wheelwrights in the High Street, but at the same
time they are shown as being in Churchgate street,
so perhaps they had two builders premises at the
same time. |
|
By
1896 they had expanded their business, then
advertising as Builders and Coal Merchants at
Oland House in the High Street, Oland House
still exists today, although it has been
modified slightly, the archway from the High
Street has been enlarged to make a wider access
to the new residential buildings at the rear of
the house, known today as Staploe Mews, this
area was once Tebbitts builders yard, Oland
House was used as their offices.
Later in 1900 they are advertising as Builders,
Coal Merchants and Auctioneers, and are calling
themselves Tebbitt & Cockerton, the Cockerton
part of the name refers to either Richard or
Alfred Cockerton, |

Oland House in 1939. |
|
both are well recorded Auctioneers in Soham
at this time.
Then we again find them in 1915 advertising
as Tebbitt & Parker, Auctioneers, Valuers
and Estate Agents, with offices in
Mildenhall as well as Soham, and in the same
year as Tebbitt & Son, Builders and
Undertakers in the High Street, Soham, also
selling Venetian blinds and Sunshades and
various other services. Tebbitts & Son built
many of the buildings in Soham, including
the recently demolished Church Hall in the
High Street in 1928/9, when Tebbitt & Son
ceased trading is not certain.
These five photographs of Tebbitts and son
employees were taken in 1939, showing them
tending to the horse and cart. The photo's
numbered 3 & 5 show Mr Lace Hook, Tebbitts
Horseman at the time. These photo's are
beleived to have been taken in Tebbits yard
behind Oland House in the High Street.
If anyone can indentify any of the other
employees we would like to here from you. |

Quakers of Cambridgeshire
and the Isle of Ely. |
|
This is a very interesting book that we
have extracted the Cambridgeshire part from, the full
title of the book is, A Collection of the Sufferings of
the People called Quakers, and was published in 1753,
but gives accounts as far back as 1653, has many names
from this area and details of what became of them
including their punishments because of their Faith, is
an absolutely fascinating read.
|
 |
|
A great
resource for anyone with interest in the
political and social history of both
Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire |
 |
|
This is a
little handwritten book dated 1817 in our
possession, that once belonged to a local Live
Stock Farmer, it is unique and is a book of
recipes of old fashioned Cures for all manner of
disorders in Cattle, Sheep and Horses, you can
read how they cured these things with local
ingredients, some sound pretty hair raising.
