Littleport
Parish.
Littleport
is an extensive Parish, containing 16,390 acres, its population in 1801
was 1,602 in 1831 2,644 and in 1841 3,365 Souls. The amount of assessed
property is £1,768. Littleport Fen, containing about 28,000 acres, is
drained by two steam engines of 30 or 40 horse power each. Before steam
power was introduced there were 75 wind engines in this district. The
soil is various but of excellent quality, the Principle Land Owners are
the Earl of Hardwicke, Clare Hall College, Cambridge, Mr Henry Martin,
Rev. - Hall, Sir Charles Morgan, John Little and William Luddington
Esqs, .
Manor- Littleport, which had been one of the ancient estates
of the Church of Ely, was alienated by Bishop Heton in 1600, the
Partheriches possessed it for nearly a Century, it was purchased in
1734 of Edward Partheriche, Esq., by Lord Chancellor Hardwicke, from
whom it lineally descended to the Earl of Hardwicke, the present
proprietor.
The Village of Littleport, which is large and contains
some very good houses, stands about 5 miles N.N.E. from Ely, on the
post road from Cambridge to Downham Market. It is said to be almost as
rare to see a coach here as a ship at Newmarket.
The Church,
dedicated to St James is a plain structure with a tower in pretty good
preservation. The benefice is a Vicarage in the Deanery of Ely, rated
in the Liber Regis at £8, but now returned at £1,487 nett per annum.
The Bishop of Ely is Patron, and the Rev. E.B.Spark, M.A. Incumbent.
The tithes were commuted in 1839, aggregate amount, £209. due to Clare
Hall Cambridge, and £1,800 to the Vicar. There are 76 acres of Vicarial
Glebe, and 81 acres of Rectorial Glebe. The Vicarage House is a good
building.
Here are neat Chapels for the Baptist, Wesleyans, and
Primitive Methodists, and there are two neat Wesleyan Chapels in the
Fens. The National School, which stands near the Church, is a handsome
building.
Apshall or Apeshall is a farm house 3 miles North from
Littleport, and Dairy houses, consisting of a few scattered houses in
the Fen, about 4 miles from the Village are also in this Parish.
The
gross rental of the Town Estate is £430 per annum, out of which various
expenses are paid, such as taxes, drainage, ditching, and repairs, and
the remainder is applied to the relief of the poor indiscriminately.
The other Charities in 1837 amounted to £5.10s. per annum, and there
are 21 tenements, inhabited by poor persons rent free.
