Newmarket
All Saints Parish. Cambridgeshire.
Newmarket
is a handsome market town, situated partly in the hundred of Cheveley,
in the County of Cambridgeshire, and partly in the hundred of Lackford
in the County of Suffolk. The centre of the main street being
the
division of the Counties. It stands about 13 miles N.E. from
Cambridge, 14 W. from Bury St. Edmunds, and 61 miles N.N.E. from
London. It comprises the Parishes of All Saints and St
Mary's,
the latter of which is in Suffolk: and it is rather remarkable that
these parishes extend no further than the Town, which occupies nearly
the whole of their area, 570 acres. The amount of assessed
property in both parishes is £6,178; and the population in 1801 was
1,792; in 1831, 2,848; and in 1841, 2,956 souls. the Duke of
Rutland is Lord of the Manor by inheritance from Charles, Duke of
Somerset, who gave it with Cheveley and other Manors in the
neighbourhood, in marriage with his daughter to the Marquis of Granby.
