Hills, On the 16th December, at Ely Thomas Addison Hills, in his 98th
Birthday.
Death of Ely Nonagenarian
It
is with regret we announce this week the death of a very old and
respected Resident in Mr Thomas Addison Hills, who for very many years
carried on the business of a Printer & Bookseller in the City.
Mr
Hills who had reached an extraordinary age being in his 98th year,
served his apprenticeship in an office in Huntingdon, and subsequently
made his way to Cambridge where he obtained employment as a Printer at
the Independent Press Office, that was as long ago as 1827. After a
time he secured a position at the University Press, and in 1831 set out
for Ely, where he set up in business on his own account. Mr Hills was
editor of The Cathedral Handbook, he founded the Savings Bank at Ely
and acted as Secretary for more than half a Century, and for a long
period was Church Warden of St Mary's , he retired from business some
years ago but still took a keen interest in local affairs.
