By indentures of lease and release, the release dated 19th October 1750, in consideration of £105. paid by Elizabeth Cawthorne therein described, an enclosed piece of pasture ground, containing by estimation two and a half acres, lying at a place called Metham, and one other inclosed piece of pasture, containing by estimation two acres, at a place called Darby Setts, were conveyed to the Rev. John Francis, Vicar of Soham, and his successors, and to other Trustees, therein named, of the second part, and their heirs, upon trust, to permit the Vicar of Soham for the time being, with any one of the other Trustees, to let the premises, and, after all necessary payments, to pay yearly to the Clerk of the Chapel of Barway the sum of 30s., and to distribute the residue amongst such sick poor of the Parish, not having received alms or relief, and being communicants of the Church of England, for their better support and assistance during their sickness, as the said Vicar and any three of the other Trustees should think meet; the payment to any one poor family not to exceed in one year 8s.
No conveyance has been made since the foundation. The two acres and two and a half acres, which are in good condition, are let respectively to Isaac Cliff and William Petit, as yearly tenants, at rents of £4. 10s. each, regularly paid. They are not subject to any land tax.
The application is made in exact conformity with the directions of the founder.
There is now a balance of £4. 11s. in the hands of the Vicar, it being impossible to find a sufficient number of objects answering the description in the deed.
