By
indentures of lease and release, the release dated 19th October 1750,
in consideration of £105. paid by Elizabeth Cawthorne therein
described, an enclosed piece of pasture ground, containing by
estimation two and a half acres, lying at a place called Metham, and
one other inclosed piece of pasture, containing by estimation two
acres, at a place called Darby Setts, were conveyed to the Rev. John
Francis, Vicar of Soham, and his successors, and to other Trustees,
therein named, of the second part, and their heirs, upon trust, to
permit the Vicar of Soham for the time being, with any one of the other
Trustees, to let the premises, and, after all necessary payments, to
pay yearly to the Clerk of the Chapel of Barway the sum of 30s., and to
distribute the residue amongst such sick poor of the Parish, not having
received alms or relief, and being communicants of the Church of
England, for their better support and assistance during their sickness,
as the said Vicar and any three of the other Trustees should think
meet; the payment to any one poor family not to exceed in one year 8s.
No conveyance has been made since the foundation. The two acres and two
and a half acres, which are in good condition, are let respectively to
Isaac Cliff and William Petit, as yearly tenants, at rents of £4. 10s.
each, regularly paid. They are not subject to any land tax.
The application is made in exact conformity with the directions of the
founder.
There is now a balance of £4. 11s. in the hands of the Vicar, it being
impossible to find a sufficient number of objects answering the
description in the deed.
