The
photo on the left was taken standing on Stone Bridge looking
towards Churchgate Street, (High Street today), the Pub on the right is
The Ship, and in the distance on the left can be seen The Red Lion.
The
photo on the right is how it looks today, taken from virtually the same
spot as the picture on the left, with The Ship & Red Lion
public houses still
trading.
The first reference to it being called Bridge Street
was found in the mid 19th century, shown as running from Red Lion
Square to the Stone Bridge. In 1656 it was part of Churchgate Street
the other side of the Bridge was Sand Street, a reference to a Bridge
here is recorded in 1260 and its name Stone Bridge seemed to appear in
the 17th century and is also shown named Stone Bridge on a map of 1876,
and still retains its name today.
