The
three photos show Broad Piece heading towards The Cotes from Mereside.
Broad Piece runs from Mereside to The Cotes. In 1656 Broad Piece, The
Cotes and Mereside were all part of and marked on the map as The Meare
Bank Common, a narrow stretch of land. In 1841 Broad Piece was in the
same position as today, in 1902 the Mereside Road is also named as
Broad Piece.
The image on the right shows a very different view of The Piece,
probably taken c.1920's or 30's.
The Meer side of the road on the left is mainly industrial, with lots
of new housing developments especially at the Northern end to the
right, with a few hundred houses being built or nearing completion, it
was not to long ago a very quite lane leading to Barway & the
Ely Road, traffic will increase dramatically when the new housing
development is completed with a new road joining the Ely road with this
one, enabling lorries etc an easier route to the industrial area's in
The Piece & Mereside.
