The
Photo was taken from the Red Lion in the High Street looking towards
Brook Dam.
Described in the 13th century as a Causeway leading to the slightly
isolated Brook Street. Recorded on a map of 1656 as an extension
of Brook Street naming Brook Dam Lane as Brook St.
Brook Dam Lane was also known as New Street in past times, to excess
Brook Street from Brook Dam Lane you will have to cross the Soham Lode
via an iron foot bridge that was placed there about 100 years ago,
there is no vehicle access at this point, although it is known that
there was an ancient ford at this point on the Lode, even today some
folk still remember crossing the river via horse and cart when
delivering heavy items to the cottages on the other side. This ancient
trackway has now been lost beneath gardens and modern buildings, but
would have led you into an area known as The Town Closes.
Brook Dam Lane also leads you to Paddock Street & East Fen
Common and has changed in looks dramatically in recent years, with the
demolishing of the Old Barn, Boon's Garage & other old cottages
etc, to be replaced with modern buildings, flats etc.
