The
left hand photo was taken from the Fordham Road end of Cherry Tree Lane
beside the Cherry Tree Pub. On the right was taken from the junction of
Cherry Tree Lane and the Butts.
The
photo on the left shows Cherry Tree Lane heading down towards the
Railway line etc.
Cherry Tree Lane is an ancient lane that runs to the right of the
Cherry Tree Public House. It is shown on a map of 1656, called Broad
Lane and still follows the same coarse today and most likely got its
name from the old Cherry Tree Public House that burnt down, the modern
Cherry Tree Pub is built on its site. it is also inline with Regal
Lane, another ancient lane known originally as Malin Lane, these two
lanes would have most likely connected in ancient times at a spot known
as The Butchers Causeway, now apart of Fordham Road.
Cherry Tree Lane is unsuitable for cars being a dirt track, and is
quite creepy if you walk alone down there at night time, especially in
the Summer months, with trees either side forming a canopy, making it
very dark. It also leads you up another track by the rear
entrance to the Cemetery and leading you onwards towards The Butts, the
other way leads you over the Railway Line in the direction of the Meer
and Wicken etc. There was also an ancient fair ground down this lane
used in bygone times.
