Churchgate
Street so called by the 1460's and spelt Cherchegatestrete in 1462. In
1650 Soham contained 200 houses, most of these inhabited
Churchgate Street. two thirds of its houses were on the East
side of this Street, the Western side being less populated,
the Central portion South of the Church being least populated as it had
no back lane. Shown on a map of 1656 as running from Cross Green
through the Town to Clay Street at Red Lion Square. On a map of 1876
the road from Cross Green to the Church was called The High Street, The
High Street being Churchgate Street. Today it runs from Cross Green
pass the Church to White Hart Lane, the remainder of the Street from
this point to Red Lion Square is today the High Street.

near the Church wall, with the Market Place / Street on the right, The
white building on the right is The Crown Public House now
closed, with the Fountain pub on the left.

On the right is a view of Churchgate Street from the High Street, the
Church wall on the left, and in the distance can be seen The Fountain
Public House, on the front right is The White Hart Commercial Hotel at
the end of White Hart Lane now closed. You can still see the words
"Licensed to let a Horse and Gig" and "Commercial Hotel" painted on the
outside wall.

The
photo on the left was taken opposite the Church showing the old Post
Office now Lloyds Bank & Fullers Bakery, with the white
building on the right "Poppys Bistro" dating to the 15th / 16th
century, and the building next to it on the right being the old White
Hart
Inn,
The right hand photo is looking towards the Church, the second building
on the right is Treadway and Percy Soham Brewers, "formerly the
Mainprice Brewery" in the early 1900's.

The

Churchgate Street in front of the Church on the right towards the High
Street.
The view on the right was taken on Cross Green / Pratt Street looking
towards Churchgate Street, showing the present day Vicarage on the left
and the old Grammar School on the right now closed, with the Church
just to be seen in the distance.
