In 1650 Soham contained 200 houses, most of these inhabited  Churchgate Street. two thirds of  its houses were on the East side of  this Street, the Western side being less populated, the Central portion South of the Church being least populated as it had no back lane. Shown on a map of 1656 as running from Cross Green through the Town to Clay Street at Red Lion Square. On a map of 1876 the road from Cross Green to the Church was called The High Street, The High Street being Churchgate Street.
