
Clay
Street lies to the South of the Church. Known as and spelt c.1397 Le
Cley and Cleymere in 1404, also known as Bull Lane prior to 1400, then
after also bore it's modern name of Clay Street, spelt in 1540
Cleystrete. On a map of 1656 it was shown as Bull Lane alias Clay
Street, and Clay Street was also shown in the present position of Mill
Corner, bearing the name of Clay Street alias Mill Street. In the
1400's it was inhabited by 20 houses. And at some point in its history
it was also called Meer Street. The subsoil being of clay.
Clay Street today runs from Red Lion Square down to Mereside.
