Fountain
Lane runs west from Churchgate Street and lies North of the Church,
Shown on a map of 1656 as Lyon Lane, Then on the 1851 census
as Fountain Lane, probably getting its name from the Fountain Public
House, which was Previously known as the White Lion in the
17th century.

The
photo on the left shows the Fountain pub on the right and the entrance
to the recreation grounds and Pavilion to the left.
The photo on the right was taken at the bottom end of Fountain Lane,
the turning on the left is Station Road, the large building is where
Boyces seed merchants & house used to be before it was
demolished a few years ago.
On
the left shows a view about half way down Fountain Lane, the Alms
Houses next door to the old Angel Pub can just be seen in the distance
at the bottom of the lane.
The houses on the left are on the boundary of the old Place grounds,
Fountain Lane is a short lane leading from Churchgate Street at the
Church entrance and Fountain pub, to the junction of Station Road and
Gardiners Lane.

Two
very similar views of about 100 years apart, showing the Fountain pub
and part of Churchgate Street in front of the Church.
