The
High Street is situated between White Hart Lane and Red Lion
Square, the main shopping area today, the earliest we can find the name
High Street is in 1601 when it was spelt Highstreete. In 1876 it was
shown on a map as running from Cross Green to the Church. The High
Street then being called Churchgate Street. The High Street still
retains many fine old buildings.

The
photo on the right although it is inscribed the High Street, shows The
Ship public house
which is really in Bridge Street.
