The
photo on the left was taken from Paddock Street looking towards the
Market Place in the distance.
On the right shows the Market Place taken from Churchgate Street, on
the right of this photo was where Our Lady Chapel once stood, recorded
in 1846. There was a chapel recorded in the c.1400's as being "The
Chapel in the highway", maybe it was this one as no other location has
been found so far as to where it was.
The earliest date found so far for a Market in Soham is in 1679 when
Thomas Chicheley, the Lord of the Manor, obtained a charter to hold a
market on Thursdays, probably held outside the Church entrance area,
lasting into the early 1700's. An attempt was made in 1811 to revive
the market with out success, another effort in 1839 lead by John Dobede
was successful, being held on a Friday outside the Church Gates on the
Junction of Fountain Lane, closing sometime in the late 1800's. In 1971
it was rived once again on its present site being held on Fridays.
Today unfortunately there is no Market in Soham, although a few are
trying to revive it, but it will probably have to be in new
location due to the development of a residentual building
that has just been built on the side of the Market Place, not shown in
the photo.
Market Street and Market Place are situated opposite the Church entrance, at one end is Churchgate Street the other end Paddock Street, Shown on a map of 1656 but no name shown, in 1876 the whole street is called the Market Place. In 1886 it is shown as being called Crown Lane, containing the Crown Inn and Town Hall, the Market Place is shown located directly outside the Church Entrance at the junction with Fountain Lane, in 1902 the street is still being called Crown Lane with the Market Place being the same as 1886.
