Mere
Side also Mere Street so called by 1630 and shown on a map of 1656 as
The Meare Banke Common inhabited by 20 dwellings, which probably stood
on sites taken from the Fen next to the Mere and a further 30 dwellings
are shown by the 1870's.
Mereside
today is a relatively quite street that
runs all the way from the bottom of Clay Street to Julius Martin Lane,
although with the Mill site housing development taking place
and the proposed housing development near the old station it will
become completely congested with traffic in the future along with Clay
Street, this may also cause some flooding in the wet periods to the
present properties in Mereside, due to the location of where these
houses are being built.
The gardens of some of the present properties are already prone to
flooding.
