The
Red Lion Square probably named after the Red Lion Pub is at
the junction of Clay Street and the High Street. In 1656 the Square is
shown on a map the same shape as today but no name is given. Containing
today at its centre the War Memorial & Train Explosion
Memorial. It is possible that this area was used as a market place or
Town square further back in history.
