Sand
Street runs Southwards from Stone Bridge and was so called by
1350. In 1404 it was spelt Sandstret, It is shown on a map of 1656 with
only 4 houses standing next to the bridge and not many others before
reaching its Southern end where there were nine. The Southern end was
called Townsend in 1430 until 1600. This part is where it junctions of
into The Butts. In the 19th Century several professional men lived
here. Sand Street got its name from the ground here being Sandy Gravel.
