The photo on the left was taken from the forecourt of Townsend Garage, looking northwards and leading to The Shade.

Townsend runs from the North of Hall Street to the junction with The Holmes, the area where Townsend Garage is situated, so called by 1628, in 1656 it was virtually uninhabited and contained the Hallstreete Closes, The Holmes Closes and Townsend North Closes.
